Open letter from our scholarship recipient.

The Boots to Scrubs scholarship aims to assist rural and regional women, aspiring for a career in medicine, to assist in easing the financial struggles that come with full time studies and placements. Studying medicine poses many costs to medical students, including university fees, accommodation, relocations, medical equipment, clothing/uniform and travel expenses. This doesn’t even include the usual daily expenses like bills, rent or mortgage, groceries, and school fees/childcare. An open letter from one of the Boots to Scrubs 2025 Scholarship winners, Caitlin, is one example of the impact the scholarship has in providing opportunity to women in medicine.

An Open Letter to Boots to Scrubs:

I am writing this letter with deep appreciation for everyone involved in this organisation, from current and future donors, to mentors, and to partnered organisations such as Birdsnest and Dress for Success.

I cannot overstate how important my Boots to Scrubs scholarship has been to my success in my first year of medicine. This year has been incredibly challenging, but being able to afford essentials such as electronics, textbooks, accommodation, and fuel lifted an enormously heavy burden from my shoulders.

Before receiving the Evelyn ‘Nooie’ Wong Memorial Scholarship, I was struggling to afford even basic necessities like groceries, and I was constantly worrying about how I would provide for my young daughter while dedicating myself to study. I often felt as though I had embarked on something that was out of reach, and I questioned whether I could continue pursuing my dreams.

The dedication of the Boots to Scrubs team is truly unmatched. Throughout this entire journey, I felt supported, encouraged, and understood. Every interaction, whether that be a phone call with a friendly voice or a prompt, clear email response, reinforced that I was not navigating this alone.

I commend every single person involved in this organisation. What you are doing for women in medicine is profoundly meaningful, and it cannot be overstated. Your work gives me immense hope for the future. Knowing that my daughter will grow up in a world where women are afforded opportunities like these in careers that have long been dominated by men.

Finally, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to Dr Vennassa Wong, whose generosity made my first year studying possible. She is, herself, a great inspiration to me, and I am honoured to receive the scholarship dedicated to her sister.

Thank you,

Caitlin
